Gryazin, 20, won two stages and led for much of leg one and even retook top spot from eventually rally winner Esapekka Lappi as the battle for first place intensified on Sunday morning.

ERC General Co-ordinator Jean-Pierre Nicolas, who forms part of the three-person judging panel along with Eurosport Events’ Director of Editorial Gilbert Roy, and Colin’s father Jimmy, presented Gryazin with his award in Liepāja this evening.

“This was a fantastic performance by young driver and it’s really encouraging to see,” said Nicolas. “We look forward to seeing more great performances from Vasily in this year’s ERC.”

The Colin McRae ERC Flat Out Trophy is presented on all rounds of the European championship to the driver whose performance best embodies the spirit of the rallying legend. Robert Kubica was chosen as the winner on the opening event of 2014 in Austria.

Gryazin, who competes under a Latvian licence, was driving a Ford Fiesta S2000 for Sports Racing Technologies alongside navigator Dmitry Chumak.
