Emīls has followed in his father’s footsteps – Didzis Blūms is a multiple time medalist in the Latvian rallysprint championship. Emīls began his racing career in supersprint events and some amateur winter racing. In 2012, on his second try, he won the selection process to secure a driver’s place in Okartes Autosporta Akadēmija – team that provided him a full season in the Latvian rally championship with a Ford Fiesta R2 car. During his debut season in 2013, he showed consistent and quick performance, including his first win in the second event of the Latvian rally championship, Rally Liepāja-Ventspils. His main rival in the battle for the R2 class title was his teammate, Ralfs Sirmacis, and Emīls had to settle for second place at the end of the season.
He began the 2014 season as a privateer, but was invited to return to LMT Autosporta Akadēmija (previously Okartes Autosporta Akadēmija) during the season. Throughout the season, Emīls won two rallies (in R2 class) – 300 Lakes Rally and Rally Kurzeme, finished second twice, but, because of his three retirements, had to settle for a bronze in the Latvian championship.
